Construction of Diaphragm Wall
Diaphragm walls can best be defined as underground structural elements used for retention purposes and to create water tight barriers. They are constructed as normal cast in situ walls.
The slurry trench method is used when these concrete walls are constructed which involves alternate or successive panel along the proposed wall. Installation begins with the construction of shallow concrete guide walls. The excavation is then executed using a grab clamshell or other specialized equipment, the slurry is pumped in, a guide tube is placed at one end and a prefabricated reinforcing cage is lowered into the trench. The essence of the slurry trench method is defined by the pressure the slurry exerts on the trench walls avoiding a collapse.
Eventually, the bentonite slurry is replaced by tremie concrete. After setting, the guide tube is withdrawn and the construction proceeds to the next panel.
